Cultural Education 4 Kids brings an interactive cultural reading lesson to children in grades Kindergarten through Third Grade with no cost to the school. It Provides each child with a book that promotes an early love of reading and introduces children to service learning by having them complete a project that is donated to a group in the community.  To date this program has distributed more than 500 books.

This year's book will be Sitti's Secrets by Naomi Shihab Nye and will be brought to children attending 3rd grade.  This book is about Mona who travels from her home in the U.S. to visit her grandmother's small Palestinian village on the West Bank. Children are introduced to the difference in culture as well as the struggles faced by her grandmother. Mona writes to the president when she gets home and expresses her concerns about the situation in Palestine. "I vote for peace. My grandmother votes with me." says Mona.  Students who participate in this program in 2009 will participate in service learning by composing their own letter to the president.  They will write about what bothers them and what they'd like to see change and offer suggestions on how to change it.  Blossom will then forward their letters to President Obama.

Our 2008 book Tar Beach was giifted to 300 children in first grade. Children were taken back in time to visit Harlem in 1939 and travel above the city through the eyes of an 8 year old little girl. The book addresses issues of race and class while expressing the power of imagination.
